Matt directs Pew’s ocean habitat portfolio, overseeing Blue Nature Alliance, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy Project, and the initiative to protect the Southern Ocean. Matt has led efforts to secure some of the world’s largest marine protected areas; efforts that have secured protection of approximately 6.6 million square kilometers of ocean, an area equivalent to two thirds the landmass of the United States. Pew’s ocean habitat efforts work with citizens, governments, and scientists around the globe to protect and conserve some of the world’s most important marine environments. Matt previously launched and directed Pew’s global shark conservation efforts, directed ocean campaigns for Environmental Defense Fund, and worked on sustainable fisheries management and reauthorization of the United States fisheries law, the Magnusson Stevens Act. Matt is also an Eagle Scout and fisherman.
